Copa Airlines named “Mexico and Central America’s Leading Airline” by the World Travel Awards

  • Panamanian airline earns honor at an Aug. 9 ceremony at Centro Cultural Itchimbía in Quito, Ecuador.

Panama City, Aug. 11, 2014 - Copa Airlines, subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A., {NYSE: CPA}, was named “Mexico and Central America’s Leading Airline” by the World Travel Awards, one of the most important global tourism awards and sometimes called the “Tourism Oscars.”


The General Manager of Copa Airlines in Ecuador, Luis Miguel Reyes, accepted the award on behalf of the airline on Aug. 9 at a ceremony at the Centro Cultural Itchimbía in Quito, Ecuador.

Members of the tourism industry and the general public select the World Travel Awards recipients; winners are determined by votes. Last year, the World Travel Awards received more than 500,000 votes for the more than 9,000 nominees, which included airlines, airports, hotels, tourism companies and destinations.

Considered the most prestigious prizes in the aviation industry, the World Travel Awards are represent excellence in the tourism industry worldwide. Winners are chosen by votes from the world’s principal tourism operators, travel agencies and travel executives. The world media group WTA, which also celebrated its 21st anniversary at the event, organizes the awards. More than 300 representatives of the tourism industry from the American continent and its organizers from the United Kingdom participated in the ceremony. WTA unveiled the names of the winners of the World Travel Awards to its 1.7 million monthly readers and a television audience of around 90 million.
