Use of portable electronic devices onboard - Copa Airlines

Panama, December 13, 2013 - With the aim of continuing to provide its customers with the best service, Copa Airlines announces the successful completion of the testing that will allow passengers to use their portable electronic devices (PEDs) throughout their flights.

Until now, Copa, in strict compliance with international aviation regulations, did not permit electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, e-readers, or electronic games, to be turned on or used from the time when the airplane door was closed until the aircraft reached an altitude of 10,000 feet. Now, all passengers traveling with Copa who have portable electronic devices (except for personal or laptop computers) weighing less than 2 pounds will be able to have their devices on, in airplane mode or with the Internet connection disabled, from the time when the airplane door is closed until landing.

Copa Airlines has completed all of the testing and requirements established by international regulations to implement the use of portable electronic devices (PED), including the regulations of the Panamanian Civil Aeronautics Authority (AAC) that restrict the use of certain electronic devices on airplanes, to avoid interference with cockpit instruments and communication. Thus, it has been proven that all Copa Airlines and Copa Airlines Colombia airplanes have the required modern technology to permit the use of these devices without interfering in any way with normal flight operations.

“Announcing the launch of this implementation puts us at the forefront of aeronautical and safety systems in Latin America and the rest of the world. We are confident that this announcement takes us one step further in our tireless efforts to continually improve our customers´ travel experience,” said the Director of Customer Experience at Copa Airlines, Diana Mizrachi.

In connection with this announcement, Copa Airlines is offering its customers an area on its website with information about the launch of this new way of traveling, and an extensive list of the devices that travelers will be able to have on during their flights.
