Dry season
November to April, with sunnier days and clear skies, ideal for exploring Antigua and taking volcano trips.
Green season
May to October: greener landscapes, spectacular rivers and waterfalls, and fewer tourists. Plan hikes and volcanoes for the morning.
Holy Week
Between March and April, Antigua fills with processions and carpets made of sawdust and flowers. It's one of the most sought-after times: book in advance.
Giant kites
Every November 1, the Sumpango Giant Kite Festival fills the sky with color, near Antigua.
Altitude and warm layers
In Antigua and the highlands, days are mild and nights are cool: bring a jacket.
Antigua, Lake Atitlán or Flores: where should you stay?
It depends on your route: Antigua is the most practical base to start, Lake Atitlán for volcanoes and Mayan towns, and Flores for visiting Tikal. Guatemala City works for your first or last night.
Antigua Guatemala
Many travelers start in Antigua Guatemala because it's close to the airport, has a good range of hotels and connects to other destinations in the country. It's a good fit if you're looking for history, food and nearby volcanoes.
Panajachel, Lake Atitlán
Panajachel is usually the most practical base because of its transportation connections, lodging and tourist services. It's a good fit for a first trip to the lake.
San Juan La Laguna and San Marcos
San Juan La Laguna stands out for its art, textile cooperatives and cultural atmosphere; San Marcos La Laguna draws those looking for wellness and tranquility.
Santa Cruz La Laguna
Lodging with lake views in a more relaxed atmosphere. It's usually reached by boat.
Flores Island
A small island on Lake Petén Itzá, with colorful streets and views of the water. It's the most common base for visiting Tikal and Yaxhá.
Guatemala City
Areas like Zona 10 and Zona 14 are home to hotels, restaurants and shopping spaces. It's a good fit if your flight arrives late or leaves early.
What places should you visit in Guatemala?
Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán and Tikal are the must-sees of a first trip. With more days, add volcanoes, Semuc Champey or the highland markets. For each place, we tell you who it's for.
Antigua Guatemala
Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobblestone streets, colorful facades and ruins of old convents. For exploring on foot, at an easy pace.
Cerro de la Cruz
One of the must-do plans in Antigua Guatemala: a lookout over the colonial rooftops with Agua Volcano in the background. To start your trip with the best view.
Lake Atitlán
A lake of volcanic origin surrounded by the San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán volcanoes, and by Mayan towns. For nature and photography lovers.
Tikal National Park
Guatemala's most iconic archaeological site, with Mayan temples rising above the Petén jungle. For travelers who love history; sunrise is one of the most special moments.
Yaxhá
A quieter Mayan site than Tikal, between Yaxhá Lagoon and Sacnab Lagoon. To combine with Tikal from Flores.

How do you get to Guatemala with Copa?
Choose your departure city, connect at the Hub of the Americas® in Panama City and continue to Guatemala City.
What happens when you arrive at the airport in Guatemala?
You go through immigration with your passport, your departure or onward ticket and the address where you're staying; you pick up your luggage, go through customs and head out to your booked transfer, your hotel's transfer or your rental car.
Do you need to rent a car in Guatemala?
It isn't necessary for the classic route. Between Antigua and Lake Atitlán, the most practical option is a booked transfer, private or shared, or your hotel's transfer. If you prefer to drive, a car gives you the freedom to stop at lookouts and towns.
Booked transfers
Tourist shuttles are shared minibuses that directly connect the country's main tourist destinations, and most offer hotel pickup. You can also book private transportation with a driver.
Rental car
Your foreign driver's license is valid for 30 days from your entry into the country. Carry your original passport along with your license.
Choose your vehicle for the route
If your route includes mountains, Lake Atitlán or Petén, ask the rental company whether an SUV or 4x4 is a good idea.
Allow extra time for your drives
Guatemala is a mountainous country: a drive through the mountains will take a little longer than a drive through a valley. Plan your changes of base without rushing.
On Lake Atitlán
The lake towns are explored by boat, with some of the best views of Lake Atitlán. Arrange your trips with your lodging.
How do you combine Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal?
With a week, Antigua and Lake Atitlán are the most comfortable combination. If you want to add Tikal, add two or three days and consider a domestic flight to Flores, in Petén, instead of the road trip.
First trip: Antigua and Atitlán
Ideally, spend between three and four days in Antigua and between 2 and 4 days at Lake Atitlán. With a week, this pair leaves you time to enjoy it at an easy pace.
What about Tikal?
Tikal is in the north, in Petén. It's recommended to spend at least one full day, and many travelers spend a night near the park or in Flores for sunrise.
Is it worth flying to Flores?
If your itinerary includes the north of the country, yes: the domestic flight between Guatemala City and Flores is the most common way to get to Tikal, compared with a long road trip.
An order that works
Start in Antigua, continue to Lake Atitlán, head back toward Guatemala City and fly to Flores for Tikal. Finish in Guatemala City for your return flight.
If you like hiking
Add a day for Pacaya Volcano or two for Acatenango from Antigua, and a rest day afterward.
How many days in total
The distances let you explore several iconic destinations in a 7- to 10-day trip. With fewer days, stick to fewer bases.
What practical tips should you know before traveling to Guatemala?
Pack layers and comfortable shoes, combine cash and card, try pepián and Antigua coffee, and plan your market visits around the day of the week.
What to pack
Light clothing for the day and a jacket for the evenings, comfortable shoes for Antigua's cobblestone streets, and sunscreen.
Cash and card
You can pay by card at hotels and tourist restaurants, and there are ATMs in major cities. For markets and towns, bring quetzales.
Typical food
Try pepián, the national dish, kak’ik from Alta Verapaz, tamales and plantain rellenitos.
Antigua coffee
The most famous coffee region in the country, surrounded by volcanoes. A tour of a nearby farm makes a good half-day plan.
Textiles and crafts
Mayan textiles, jade, handmade ceramics and high-altitude coffee are the most popular souvenirs.
If you climb Acatenango
Most tours are organized over two days and one night, with a guide, camping and basic gear. It requires good physical condition; bring warm layers, a hat and gloves.
Tipping
It's customary to leave a tip at restaurants.
