Not-allowed or restricted items

Many common items can be very dangerous in flight. Temperature and pressure changes can cause leaks, toxic fumes or fires. View a complete list of prohibited items at www.tsa.gov. Restricted items will be confiscated by the TSA.

You must declare any dangerous goods to the airline. Failure to do so violates U.S. Federal Law.

Batteries

A maximum of two (2) spare/loose lithium batteries are permitted in each item of carry-on luggage. Both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries are permitted.

Keep in mind:

  1. Each spare/loose lithium battery must be individually protected as described below to prevent short circuits:
    • Place each battery in its original packaging,
    • Tape over exposed terminals
    • Place each battery in a protective pouch
    • Place each battery in a separate, hermetically sealed plastic bag.
  2. Batteries in carry-on luggage must not come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry.
  3. Take steps to prevent batteries from being crushed or punctured by other objects.
  4. Batteries may not exceed the permitted quantity and size. The battery capacity must be between 100 watt hours and 160 watt hours. Spare batteries must be between 2 grams and 8 grams.

Non spillable batteries:
Can be transported as long as they are disconnected, the edges are isolated and the battery is tightly adjusted to the wheelchair.

Spillable batteries:
It must be disconnected and the borders must be isolated, securing the battery to the wheelchair and vertically locating the wheelchair in the plane, tightly adjusted as well. If this is not possible, the battery will be removed from the wheelchair (the wheelchair will then travel without problems), then pack it in a metal or plastic packaging with compatible and enough absorbent material to absorb all the liquid, marked "wet battery with wheelchair" and the label of “corrosive”. Finally, it will be loaded and placed in a vertical position.

If your electronic or electrical device has an installed (non-removable) lithium battery, it must be protected against any unintentional activation.

Copa Airlines is not responsible for loss or damage to any electronics of this kind in checked luggage.

  • The urn must be made of a material which allows visual inspection of the contents when passing through security checkpoints at airports (such as X-Ray machines).
  • Materials such as wood or plastic are recommended for the urn allowing for easier X-Ray examination.
  • The urn must be inside an outer packaging and surrounded by shock absorbing material to protect the contents.

Articles purchased in airport duty free stores are permitted to be carried onboard planes. They must be packaged in a sealed, tamper-evident container and show satisfactory proof that the article was purchased in the airport duty free stores on the day of travel, both for passengers departing from an airport and passengers in transit.

They are only permitted in containers of up to 100 ml or 3.4 oz. Permitted articles must be carried in a clear plastic zipper bag no larger than one quart in size. Breast milk, juice, insulin and medication may be carried on; however, if they exceed the maximum amount, they must be declared to the TSA or inspection personnel.

Liquids in containers larger than 100 ml will not be accepted, even if the container is not completely full.

* When traveling to the United States, passengers are permitted to take liquids, gels, liquor and/or aerosol bottles as carry-on baggage if purchased in the duty free stores in the Tocumen International Airport in Panama. Store employees will have to deliver the purchased items to the departure gate. If articles were purchased in other airports, they will have to be checked upon arrival in Panama due to its being the final point of departure to the United States. Passengers who buy liquids and/or gels in duty free shops in United States airports may carry them onboard the plane.

All travelers abroad to Guatemala that require entering firearms for civilian use and/or sports must submit an application to the Consulate of Guatemala so that the Department of Arms and Ammunition (DIGECAM) can issue a license and import license or special temporary license to carry weapons and/or transfer to the entry of weapons into the country. This request must be made in advance of travel date.
