Upgrade to Business Class list

1. How do I find my name on the Upgrade List?

In order to ensure the privacy of our passengers, our list only shows the first three letters of the last name and the first letter of the first name. For example, a person named Karla Lopez would appear on this list as follows: “LOP, K”.

2. Why does this list constantly change?

The list is updated and re-ordered based on the ConnectMiles PreferMember status of passengers as they check in for the flight and become eligible for upgrade.

The list of passengers who have been granted upgrades can also change frequently because certain upgrades are processed ahead of time via our PreferMember Passenger Upgrade Automation (PUA) system, which awards courtesy upgrades anywhere from 5 days to 3 hours before the flight departure time. The PUA process upgrades PreferMember members in priority order, even if these passengers have not yet checked in for their flight.

3. Who appears on the Upgrade List?

The Upgrade List shows two listings:

  • Passengers Upgraded to Business Class (confirmed)
  • Passengers on the Upgrade Standby List

These listings include passengers who:

  • Have purchased tickets with fares that are eligible for upgrade to Business Class: Passengers who have purchased or redeemed miles for a seat in Business Class, but were unable to reserve it due to limited capacity will appear first on the Upgrade Standby List after checking in for their flight. As space becomes available in Business Class, these passengers will be added to the list of Passengers Upgraded to Business Class.
  • Have purchased upgrades with miles: Passengers who have purchased a ticket in Main Cabin and redeemed ConnectMiles miles for a confirmed seat in Business Class will appear directly on the list of Passengers Upgraded to Business Class.
  • Have obtained PreferMember-level courtesy upgrades: These are PreferMember members and their companions who fly with courtesy upgrades. PreferMember-level members who have purchased certain full-fare tickets on eligible Copa Airlines flights can get an instant upgrade at the time of their reservation and will appear on the list of Passengers Upgraded to Business Class.
    For all other ticket types, Copa Airlines has the PreferMember Upgrade Automation (PUA) system, which automatically assigns upgrades to members of Global Service, PreferMember Presdential Platinum, PreferMember Platinum, PreferMember Gold and PreferMember Silver up to one hour before departure (subject to availability).
    Passengers who have been upgraded by PUA will be added to the list of Passengers Upgraded to Business Class. Passengers who are not pre-authorized will be added automatically to the Upgrade Standby List at the time they check in.
    In all cases, PreferMember upgrades are authorized in priority order based on PreferMember status and fare class paid. Most upgrades for a flight are pre-authorized, but when there are no-shows, additional upgrades could be authorized during the boarding process.
  • Have courtesy upgrades: These are passengers who have received compensation for inconveniences caused by irregular operations such as re-routings, overbooking, etc., or who have been extended a courtesy by the airline (diplomats, media representatives on special assignment, etc.). These passengers may appear on either of the two lists, depending on the availability of seats in Business Class, with the priority level determined by the airline.
  • Are traveling on stand-by: These are employees of Copa Airlines or their dependents who are eligible to be included on the Business Class waiting list, subject to available space. These passengers have the lowest priority on the list and are assigned seats only after all other customers on the upgrade waiting list have been seated.

4. What flights qualify for upgrades?

All flights operated by Copa Airlines that have a Business Class cabin.

5. How are upgrades prioritized?

Based on several factors, such as ConnectMiles PreferMember status, fare type purchased and/or time of check-in. Passengers who have purchased Business Class tickets, and have not been confirmed into Business Class, will have the highest priority on the waiting list.

On flights that are eligible for courtesy PreferMember upgrades, Copa Airlines PreferMember members will receive upgrades in the following priority order:

  • PR1 (Priority 1) courtesy upgrades
  • PreferMember members with full-fare tickets (class Y), in order of PreferMember level
  • Members of Global Services in all fare classes, in order of fare class
  • Companions of Global Services members
  • PreferMember Silver in all other fare classes, in order of fare class
  • Companions of PreferMember Silver members level
  • PreferMember Gold level members in all other fare classes, in order of fare class
  • Companions of members of PreferMember Gold level
  • PreferMember Platinum level members in all other fare classes, in order of fare class
  • Companions of members of PreferMember Platinum level
  • PreferMember Presidential Platinum in all other fare classes, in order of fare class
  • Companions of members of PreferMember Presidential Platinum level
  • PR2 (Priority 2) courtesy upgrades
  • PR3 (Priority 3) courtesy upgrades
  • Passengers flying on stand-by

Upgrades, for companions of PreferMember-level passengers, may not be requested until two hours before the flight departure time. If there are several customers with the same PreferMember status, the original fare class purchased will be used to determine priority. Specifically, the ranking of Copa Airlines discount fare classes, from highest to lowest priority, is as follows: classes Y, B, M, H, Q, K, V, U, S, W, E, L, T and N. If there are several customers with the same PreferMember class and rate class, time of check-in will be used as the criterion for determining order. For companions of PreferMember-level passengers, the time at which the member was added to the upgrade waiting list will be the deciding factor.

Once the PreferMember and courtesy upgrades have been assigned, all remaining passengers who are eligible for Business Class upgrades will be prioritized. Upgrades for passengers on stand-by will be granted only after seats have been assigned to all eligible passengers.

6. If I need to be on the upgrade waiting list, how do I get on it?

If you are eligible to be on the upgrade waiting list, you will be added automatically once you have completed the check-in process. If you are eligible and have gone through check-in but still do not appear on the upgrade waiting list, speak with a Copa Airlines representative at the airport. This must be handled by onsite personnel at the airport.

Sometimes passengers appear on the upgrade waiting list 24 hours before the check-in period. This happens when passengers check in for a connecting flight that departs before said time period.
