Panama, October 2, 2014 - Copa Airlines and Tocumen International Airport have decided to answer the call made by Panama’s First Lady, Lorena Castillo de Varela, on the issue of early detection of breast and prostate cancer. The campaign, under the slogan “Today we celebrate life, fighting together,” is working this year to raise awareness about the importance of this health issue in Panama.
The campaign’s symbol—a pink ribbon intertwined with a light-blue ribbon—will grace a Copa Airlines airplane throughout October as it travels the skies of the Americas. The official presentation of this airplane was attended by the First Lady of the Republic of Panama, who came to Tocumen International Airport to unveil the symbol on the Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800 NG.
Diana Mizrachi, Director of Customer Experience at Copa Airlines, said, “Year after year, it has been important to us at Copa to show our support for these campaigns against breast and prostate cancer, raising awareness about cancer prevention and early detection.”
This year, for the first time in the history of its support for this cause, Copa Airlines has joined forces with Tocumen International Airport. This step has enabled Copa to strengthen its ties and extend its cooperation with FundAyuda. It has also enabled greater publicity regarding the need to raise awareness among Panamanians about the importance of early detection of breast and prostate cancer.
In regard to the alliance with Tocumen International Airport, Mizrachi said that “joining forces is the best way to achieve the goals of the ‘Today we celebrate life, fighting together’ campaign, and to have the message of this commitment reach all of our passengers and visitors to the airport.”
Tocumen International Airport’s General Manager, Joseph Fidanque III, said that the airport is taking part in these activities “as a way of actively helping to raise awareness of the problems that affect Panamanians. It is an honor to be a part of this initiative undertaken by the Office of the First Lady to improve the lives of the Panamanian people.”
In regard to the campaign, Fidanque III said, “We will carry this message of understanding, cooperation, and celebration of life throughout the month of October, because we at Tocumen, together with our partners in this effort, support efforts to promote prevention and early diagnosis. The fact that we have 6 cancer survivors among us only strengthens our commitment.”
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women, while prostate cancer is the second most frequent cancer in men. Recent national statistics also indicate that breast and prostate cancer are the leading causes of cancer deaths in Panama. Given this reality, early detection plays an important role in improving the prognosis and survival rates in cancer cases.
